Parent/Child Classes: Ages 6 months to 3 years: Mornings only
Sea Star Swim School's Parent/Child classes are designed for children from 6 months to 3 years old, and are conducted under the watchful eye of a teacher certified bye the United States Swim School Association (USSSA).
Regular swimming gives babies a chance to exercise in a way that would not be possible on land. It allows them to feel a freedom to move, while being surrounded by warm water and the love and nurturing of a parent and a certified teacher. These classes give babies the ability and skills they need to enjoy the water safely. Classes also teach parents how to guide their babies naturally and calmly through the water.
According to the National Safety Council, drowning is the #1 cause of death in children ages 5 and under, and is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-14. Sea Star takes these statistics very seriously, as the majority of these accidents can be avoided with proper education. We believe that children as young as six months old can learn to take responsibility for themselves in the water. This means that even if they can initiate a breath and hold it -- you as the parent may have valuable time to rescue your child from drowning.
At Sea Star, we take a "middle of the road" approach to teaching the infant/toddler population. What does this mean? There are several methodologies used to teach infants and toddlers. On the one extreme, you can enroll your child in a program where you hand your child to the teacher, (s)he throws the baby into the pool and expects the baby to come to the come to the surface, roll over and float. (You may have seen this method showcased on NBC's Dateline evening news magazine.) At the other end of the spectrum, you may take your child to a program where they sing songs, kick around the pool, but never submerge or caution you to submerge once in a 45 minute time frame. The child learns to love the water, is attracted to the water, but if (s)he falls in, will be ill equipped to handle the situation.
Sea Star's approach is different. We teach parents to act responsibly in guiding their young child through the water. We submerge, using the child's natural reflexes, and we teach children the "back float" method, how to initiate three consecutive breaths and how to swim to a safe place. Parents, who are in the water with their children during the entire class, encourage, push and reinforce the skills according to their individual comfort level.
Infants ages 6 months-1 year will have a 20 minute class session. From ages 1-3, class will be 30 minutes. Parent/Child classes are morning only classes. Classes are taught on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday or Saturday, depending on seasonal demand.
We welcome visitors and observers to our Parent/Child class. Call the Sea Star office at 615-822-8800 to arrange a time to visit, or for more information about this program.
